Prayers and Bible Verses When Asking for Divine Intervention

There are moments in life when we all lift our eyes to heaven and ask God for some divine intervention to help us through various tough situations.

Then there are some times when God intervenes and asks us to direct our steps in a different path than the one we originally planned on taking.

This divine intervention is shown through some of our favorite Great American Original movies and shows, including the newest Original series, "Destination Heaven." In this series, as people grapple with a myriad of difficulties in life, God the Father meets them face-to-face to help guide them through it. The first episode will be released tonight at 8pm ET, with new episodes every Thursday!

Divine intervention is present in passages and verses throughout the bible. Let’s look at some bible verses that show God’s sovereignty and bible verses about divine intervention.

Where is Intervention in the Bible? Divine Intervention in the Old Testament

Exodus 6: 5-7 (NIV)

Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant. Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.

God saved His people from the hands of the Egyptians when He called on Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and across the Red Sea. As Exodus states, God “heard the groaning of the Israelites.” This is a clear example of God’s divine intervention and hearing His people’s prayers and pleas for help.

Exodus 14:14 (NIV)

The Lord will fight for you; you need to only be still.

Sometimes we doubt that our prayers are heard above. This Bible verse on divine intervention shows that we should be confident our prayers will be answered, that we only need to surrender our control and let God take the reins in order to hear His answer.

In the Great American Original movie, “An Unlikely Angel,” the Angel Gabriel is sent to help Janie, a young businesswoman who asks for some divine help as she prepares to become a mom. The first time Janie meets Gabriel, he is her taxi driver, perhaps a very unlikely place for a divine encounter. But that’s how God works sometimes, in the most unexpected ways and in the most unexpected places.

Daniel 6:22 (NIV)

My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”

This verse is found in the passage where Daniel is in the den of lions. Even though he’s been cast in there in hopes that he’d be eaten by the lions, God intervened and protected him from harm while in the den. When we trust in Him to answer our prayers and entrust our lives to Him, His divine intervention will find us in even the most distressing situations.

Psalm 72:12 (NIV)

For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help.

This Bible verse about divine intervention tells us that no prayer of help goes unanswered by God. We need only to send up a simple prayer and He will come to our aid.

We see even more divine intervention also in the Great American Pure Flix exclusive series, “Saved by Grace.” In each episode, angels Grace and Jeremiah intervene in the lives of those who need help in a variety of difficult situations. They help bring together families, reconcile marriages and provide healing to those they encounter.

Divine Intervention in the New Testament

2 Peter 1:3 (NIV)

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

God’s sovereignty reigns above all. Even knowing this, there are still times we might doubt that He hears our every prayer and calling for divine intervention. This verse reminds us that our knowledge of Him is enough reason for us to believe He hears our prayer.

In the second episode of “Saved by Grace,” high schooler Lily stands up for her faith in her science class by declaring she believes in God. Her knowledge and understanding of His glory and goodness leads to an angel providing divine intervention on her behalf in order to reconcile her relationship with her father after a tragic accident.

Hebrews 13:2 (NIV)

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

Christ calls us to love our neighbor and see His face in each person we encounter, including strangers. When we help a stranger, we never know how the favor might be returned to us one day, perhaps that just might be by divine intervention.

In the first episode of “Saved by Grace,” Jack helps Grace, a stranger, when she asks to use his cell phone after her car supposedly breaks down. Without knowing it, Jack helped an angel and in return Grace helps reconcile his marriage and bring his family back together again. This bible verse about divine intervention can be reflected in Jack’s actions for Grace.

Luke 1:26-31(NIV)

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.”

When the angel Gabriel visits Mary, the ultimate story of divine intervention unfolds. Mary accepts God’s will for her, thus allowing Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior to enter the world under her care. This particular Bible passage about divine intervention is important to our salvation story.

Romans 8:26 (NIV)

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Scared of motherhood, Janie sends up a prayer as a last-minute effort for help as she gets closer and closer to giving birth. God intervenes and sends the angel Gabriel in her time of need. In our times when we feel weak or need an extra dose of courage or strength, let us remember to call on God for his divine intervention.

Acts 2:2-4 (NIV)

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

God’s divine intervention also takes form in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit was sent to be with the apostles at Pentecost in preparation for their travels to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. This passage can serve as a reminder that God’s help is never far away from us, but can be there as much and as often as we need.

How Do You Ask God for Divine Intervention?

Sometimes, asking for God’s help may be hard, as we may see it as being weak or as too menial for His divine help. Thankfully, we have a God who tells us no request is too small or trivial for His intercession. Therefore, asking God for divine intervention can be simpler than it might seem.

Here are a couple of simple prayers for divine intervention:

“Come, Holy Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit can give us the wisdom, courage, and strength we need in any situation. This simple prayer can be used to have the Holy Spirit guide our words, actions and intentions in whatever we may be facing in the moment.

“Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.”

This Guardian Angel prayer originates from Catholicism. Our Guardian Angel is delighted when we ask for their help and divine intervention. They are ready and willing to meet our needs however possible.

“Heavenly Father, I am in need. O God, I cry out for your help! The storms in my life are unrelenting and I’m drowning. Yet, I will lift my eyes to you, for my help comes from you, the creator of heaven and earth. Lord, save me, keep me from evil, rescue me from this battle. For you are my keeper, my protector, my salvation. You watch over me day and night, guide my steps, and show me the way forward. My hope and my help are in you, O Lord, for you are faithful and true. All this I pray through your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.”

This prayer, written by Kathryn Shirey, was inspired by Psalm 121. When we feel we are in need, let us remember to lift our eyes to God for His help as our first line of defense.

We hope that these Bible verses and prayers of divine intervention give you peace and comfort daily, as well as in times of need. To be comforted by more examples of divine intervention, stream “An Unlikely Angel” and "Saved by Grace" now on Great American Pure Flix.
