The Bible can influence many aspects of our lives, providing guidance and direction when people need it most. It can be an especially effective tool for establishing leadership in church. Here are seven verses that demonstrate effectiveness for church leaders:
"Do to others as you would like them to do to you." Luke 6:31, NIV
Living in God’s way means following the Golden Rule. When neighbors love one another as they do themselves, they can live more fulfilling lives. This is also one of the lessons that Hamilton A. Vaughn learns in the film “HAV Faith”, when an unexpected life event lands him back in his old church.
“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3, NIV
Jesus had many characteristics that Christians should try to emulate, but one of the hardest is humility. It’s natural for leaders to want to look their best in others’ eyes, but the way to truly appear capable and demonstrate leadership in church is by exercising modesty and working to value others more than yourself.
“But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.” Matthew 20:26, NIV
A good leader leads the flock, but a great leader serves the flock. It’s a church leader’s responsibility to tend to the needs of their congregation as well as anticipate them. In “HAV Faith”, everyone must learn that infighting between leaders doesn’t serve the congregation, only their own egos.
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9, NIV
At times, members of a congregation will have their faith tested. It can feel like no matter the good we do, evil is still rewarded. But Paul’s promise here is that we will reap all the goodness we’ve sewn if we don’t lose heart.
“Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:4, NIV
People typically want to serve their own needs first. However, when people put aside their own interests to help others, they often find their lives become more enhanced as a result.
“Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory.” Proverbs 11:14, ESV
Without proper leadership, members of a flock may fail to work together and live their best lives. When there are effective leaders providing humble counsel, however, everyone benefits. This is the lesson that leaders of the Mission Church must learn in “HAV Faith”.
“It is an abomination for kings to commit wicked acts, For a throne is established on righteousness.” Proverbs 16:12, ESV
Unfortunately, some leaders may use their positions to further their own agenda instead of helping the greater good. However, leadership in church requires humility and a dedication to serving a need larger than themselves.
