The beginning of the school year is a busy time. Children greet the start of school with excitement, nervousness, and maybe even a little fear. As the days pass, give your children the strength they need to live in faith in any environment. Cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in your family with constant reminders of God’s promises. We’ve compiled seven of His promises to us that can keep students (and parents) strong throughout the school year. You might even want to share these verses with your little one by writing them on notes and sneaking them in his or her lunchbox.
Seven of God’s Promises to Us
Throughout the Bible, God makes many promises to us. Here are just a few repeated throughout the Old and New Testament that give Christians the patience, fortitude, and kindness they need to navigate daily life:
God promises to fight for us (Exodus 14:14)
The verse says:
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Moses tells these words to the people of Israel fleeing from Egypt right before God works through him to part the Red Sea. God does not forsake his followers. Remind children dealing with unfairness in school that He works in mysterious ways, and He will stand up for those who love Him.
He promises to give us strength (Isaiah 40:31)
The social, academic, and athletic rigors of school can leave children and parents feeling drained. Remember God’s promises to keep His followers strong. The scripture says:
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. ...”
Trust that He will provide the strength your family needs.
He promises to be with us (Deuteronomy 31:8)
Fear often keeps children from reaching their potential in school. Remind them:
“The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Whether fear of the dark impacts a young child’s sleep or fear of failure keeps older children from taking measured risks, these words can provide comfort in times of struggle.
He promises us forgiveness (1 John 1:9)
Social pressures often serve as a great source of temptation in school. Give your children the tools they need to overcome mistakes.
The verse reads, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
He promises to show us the way (Hebrews 13:20-21)
God has a plan for everyone. When school seems tough, use this verse to show your children hope and possibility. It reads:
“Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
He promises to meet our needs (Philippians 4:19)
Explain the difference between want and need with this promise, which states:
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.”
Sometimes students need a reminder that God will provide.
He promises us eternal life (1 John 2:25).
“And this is what He promised us – eternal life.”
Believing in God and having faith is not always easy, but a faith in reaching everlasting life in heaven is what sets Christians apart.
God’s promises give Christians a reason to keep trying, praying, and moving forward. They give believers the ability to develop the fruit of the Spirit, to live fulfilling lives, and to touch those around them. School represents a time of growth, fun, and struggle.
