September 11 was a pivotal moment in American history. When the World Trade Center towers fell, many Americans felt their sense of security vanish as well. Before, enemies attacked on foreign soil, but Americans felt that they were safe at home. Suddenly, terrorists executed not just one, but multiple attacks, and everything changed. God’s Word is a resource that provides hope when our fortresses crumble. When our perceptions are shattered and our security is revealed to be just an illusion, God is still in control. Here are ways to commemorate 9/11 this year.
Remember Our Frailty
One of the most sobering aspects of the September 11 attacks was how completely the terrorists shattered our safety. As the most powerful and prosperous nation in the world, we felt invulnerable to attack.
Christians can take the day to examine themselves for a misplaced sense of self. We are not entitled to any power or possessions we have. They come as a gift. Ecclesiastes 5:19 says:
“Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.” (NIV)

Pray for People Who Lost Family Members
It’s been 16 years since 9/11. People who lost loved ones have lived without them ever since. Mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters were lost forever that fateful day. Pray for the children who grew up without a parent and are still struggling to understand why. Pray for spouses who became single parents and may still toil to make ends meet. Lift up mothers whose hearts were broken when their adult children were taken from them by terrorists.
Promote Solidarity
In times of tragedy, people show what they’re made of. On September 11, America came together regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion to fight evil and support those in their community who experienced loss.
Right now, there’s plenty in the news that causes division. No matter what your viewpoint, we are all Americans. Choose September 11 as a day to set aside political differences and treat others with kindness and respect, and encourage others to do the same.
Realize Evil Exists Because the World Is Fallen
Romans 8:22 says:
“For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.” (ESV)
Since Adam and Eve sinned in the garden, evil has been present. It will continue to be until Christ returns.
More evil men will seize power and use it to hurt the innocent. Christians will continue to face persecution around the world. Sickness and tragedy will continue to impact even God’s children. Our prayers reach God’s heart to help us in difficult circumstances, but the Christian’s ultimate hope is in the Almighty’s return. On September 11, pray for the day when God’s kingdom is established on Earth.
