The newest Great American Original movie, “The Engagement Plan,” will warm your heart, make you laugh, and remind you to take comfort that God has a plan. Wade is a type A financial analyst who schedules every minute of his life; Kayla is the carefree veterinarian he wants to marry. When it comes time to propose, and the special weekend he plans with their parents hits unexpected obstacles, Wade’s resolve is tested, and the fun really begins.
Kayla comes from a very faithful family, most of whom quote scripture daily. There are many mentions of scripture throughout this movie. In this article, we’re going to list them all and dive a little deeper into how we can apply them to our own faith journey.
Proverbs 16: 9 (NIV)
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
Wade’s neighbor, Mrs. Winwood, gives him this guidance when he tells her how detailed his plans are for asking Kayla to marry him. She uses this Bible verse as a warning to Wade to not get too attached to his plans and to remember to invite God to take control of the plans for his life.
This is a big lesson that Wade learns throughout the movie. It’s natural for us to want to take control of our lives and make decisions for ourselves. Like Wade, we can sometimes get too close to our plans and not want to change them for any reason whatsoever.
But as children of God, we are supposed to learn to give up control and give it to the Lord. We trust that He will lead us down the right path, like the loving Father He is. The next time you’re holding on to your own plans for your life, remember this scripture and submit your will to the Lord.

John 10:10 (NIV)
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Kayla balances out Wade’s type A tendencies by living according to the Spirit. She reminds him that God wants us to live abundantly and is happy to be guided by the Spirit in every aspect of her life. She wishes that Wade would look more to God for guidance of what the next best steps are in his own life.
You can’t always plan your life, and many times, life doesn’t turn out the way you thought it would. But with God, no matter what we’re going through, we can trust Him and still experience the joy of life and love.
Psalm 85:12 (NIV)
“The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest.”
Kayla’s father, Ed Jones, shares this advice with Wade when he arrives on the family farm. Ed and Mama Marilyn have always relied on God to give them what they need. They rely on God’s goodness rather than worrying about how they are going to provide for their family.
The Jones’ full reliance on God and entrusting of their lives to the Lord is something to be admired. When we don’t rely on God, we worry and fret over how we are going to accomplish things in time, provide for ourselves and our family, or be mentally and physically present in our lives. The Jones’ don’t have worry or anxiousness because they have witnessed how the Lord has provided throughout their lives and knows He will continue to do so.
How many times do we worry and fret about our future? This scripture reminds us to look at the times when God has indeed provided for us and remember that as we move forward.
Psalm 23: 1-3 (NIV)
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.”
Wade mentions Psalm 23 when he prays on his own after heading back to the city. He uses it to admit that he doesn’t know what he’s doing and asks for God’s guidance. For the first time in his life, Wade is looking to seek God’s will instead of trying to plan the perfect thing.
When we seek God’s will, we will feel peace in our hearts. Giving control to God means that we can trust Him to work His plans for our good. He gives us what we need and fills our soul with love, grace and mercy.

Hebrews 4:9-10 (NIV)
“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.”
Even though there is always much to do on the farm, Ed takes direction from this scripture in resting on the Sabbath, just as God did in Genesis.
It’s not always easy to remember that Sunday is a time for us to rest, reflect on our week, spend time with our loved ones and be refreshed for the week ahead. Going to service every Sunday can help put us in this mindset for the day, as well as instilling weekly traditions, such as Sunday brunch, family gatherings or activities, or just doing something we enjoy.
Romans 1:20 (NIV)
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
As a farmer and country man, Ed loves living off the land, using everything God has provided him to fill his life. But Ed doesn’t take any of that for granted, including the beauty of land that God gave him.
It’s through the beauty of nature, the visible and tangible things we can see, that reminds us of God’s invisible qualities: His vastness, His grace, His sovereign power. Let beauty be a reminder of how great our God is and a chance for us to show gratitude to Him for that beauty.
