There are many Biblical truths that we can glean from this movie to reflect upon and apply to our own life, whatever we’re going through. Let’s dive into what lessons we can learn from this movie and some Bible verses to pray with.

Seek Truth in the Word

Many of Abby’s clues in her investigation are Bible verses. Not only that, but in her own personal faith journey, the closest people around her encourage her to seek wisdom and guidance from God’s Word through scripture.

Abby’s Poppa said: “If you look through the books of the Bible, you’ll see that God created unique relationships with each of the authors. There’s an intimacy, a safety, trust. And God wants that with you too! For you to really know Him and to really trust Him with His plan.”

Poppa encourages Abby to seek an intimate relationship with God, just like we see the authors of the Bible have with our Lord. God desires a deep relationship with every single one of us. We love how Poppa points out the unique relationships God had with each author of the Bible. It’s a wonderful analogy to how different our relationship with God can look from our neighbor’s, but still how intimate and trustful He wants us to be with Him.

We may look for signs from God through many different areas of life, but it’s important to remember He gave us the Word to guide us and converse with Him.

Bible Verse to Reflect Upon

“Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.” - 1 Chronicles 16:11 (NIV)

God’s Plan for Our Lives is Different than Ours

It’s not always easy, especially for a planner like Abby, to give up control and hand over our lives to God. Abby always had a plan for her life and a certain way she wanted things to work out. But God’s plans don’t always follow our own plan. Abby experienced heartbreak and loss in a way she never thought she would have to.

Abby’s pain causes her to fall away from her relationship with the Lord. She figures maybe things will work out better for her if she choices to do it on her own. But an angel figure she encounters at the church gives her some advice that allows her to seek God once more.

“There's a difference in our lives when we're following our own self verses following the guidance of the Lord ... If there is something on your heart, something gnawing at you, that's the Lord. He's trying to tell you and guide you in the right direction.”

Abby timidly tries to pray and allow God in to her heart again. As she continues to take baby steps towards giving up control, she sees God working more and more in her life.

Bible Verse to Reflect Upon

“The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” – Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

Trust in the Lord – Even While in Pain or Transition

Abby has a lot of change going on in her life: she just moved back to her hometown, she is single again after a difficult and painful situation, and her boss is pressuring her to find new material for her podcast. Over time, Abby has fallen away from her faith, not only because of past hurts but because of the season of transition she currently is in.

Change can be scary. It not only can cause us to feel lonely but also can cause anxiety and fear of the unknown. Being fearful of the unknown can also cause us to be weary about who we trust. Abby having been away from her faith for a while, isn’t ready to jump right back in to fully trusting God.

Poppa gives her advice for this time of transition: “I know change is scary, but that doesn't mean it's not good.” He encourages her to trust that the Lord is leading her in the right way, as he later tells her, “Life’s best journeys lead you home.”

No matter what we’re going through, what our past is, it’s never too late to turn to the Lord. He will wait for you to learn how to trust Him and show you love throughout the entire process.

Bible Verse to Reflect Upon

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” - Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)
