It’s not every day that one of your favorite Great American Pure Flix actors reveals that his life story could be straight out of a movie. But that’s exactly what fans learned about Jesse Hutch after he recently revealed that he drowned while working as a white-water rafting guide.
“I drowned when I was 21 years old,” Hutch said. “That was another miracle in my life. … I should be completely, honestly dead. I shouldn’t have lived, and, if I did, I shouldn’t be able to speak, I shouldn’t be able to hear, I shouldn’t be able to talk.”

As we mentioned last month, Hutch worked as a white-water rafting guide in Canada before he moved to Hollywood to pursue acting. But after a freak accident left him underwater for anywhere from 11 to 22 minutes, it looked like that was the end.
“I was five years in so you know I was a professional at this. It wasn’t anything new and circumstances all lined up and I ended up underwater,” Hutch recalled. “And eventually somebody found me, they brought me back, they took me to the hospital, they put me in a pressure chamber … It is an absolute miracle, man. [In] weeks … I was fine. My eardrums didn’t completely explode; they should have.”
And while that all happened more than 20 years ago, the experience has stuck with Hutch as a daily reminder that God has a plan for his life.
“When I look back on my life, there was a definite hand that kept me out of trouble in many ways, and in some ways allowed me to get in just enough trouble to learn the lesson, but not walk away completely busted,” Hutch explained. “God has his hand on my life and there’s a reason for it.”
That’s why the married father of three hopes to someday share more of his story in movie form. But for now, he’s excited to ring in the holiday season with his latest Christmas movie, “A Christmas Blessing,” which is currently streaming on Great American Pure Flix.
“It’s a really cool film about helping others,” Hutch said. “My character [Otto]…helps usher every character along towards discovering their own life or the choices that I think they want to make… It’s this really cool kind of Christmas cheer mixed with just really helping others and thinking of others and allowing yourself to be changed by that.”;
