Pure Flix’s newest Original Movie “Nothing Is Impossible” starts streaming October 6. In this film, we meet Scott Beck, who was an NBA hopeful but when things didn’t go as planned he falls down on his luck in both life and love. When this happens, he begins to question his faith in God and trust in Him and His providence. Beck’s story doesn’t fall too far from Job’s in the Book of Job in the Old Testament.

Job is a “man ... blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil” who goes on to endure multiple bouts of unmerited suffering all while keeping his faith and obedience to God. God permits Satan to test Job, taking his wealth, health and children as the main message of the Book of Job unfolds. Even as others encourage Job to abandon his faith and question why he hasn't given up to on God after all that’s happened to him, he continues to persevere.
Scott Beck is similarly tested. He loses out on his dream career, the love of his life and his aspirations. When we meet him in “Nothing Is Impossible,” despite being older than many NBA hopefuls, he signs himself up for open tryouts for the local NBA team. Though the team’s leadership and coaches question why he continues to push himself through the process, Scott doesn’t give up his dream.
What is the main message of the Book of Job and what can we learn from the Book of Job? The ultimate lesson is that our suffering often serves a purpose. Though we may not comprehend it at the moment, God is working through every circumstance and situation to refine us as followers. When we do struggle and feel weak, we must call on God to be our strength and help to get through our trials. The Book of Job teaches us that we must stand firm in our faith regardless of what obstacles we encounter and no matter how our family or friends question our faith.
Let’s look at some specific verses from the Book of Job and how they can apply to Scott’s journey as well:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” – Job 1:21 (NIV)
Scott needs to find a way to continue being a good and faithful Christian while not understanding why God has taken away all that he has loved. Just like this Bible verse from the Book of Job, he tries to find the strength and fervor to continue to praise God and understand why all his struggles are happening. This is one of the main messages of the Book of Job: we need to praise God for His provision regardless of the circumstances.
But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed. – Job 4:5 (NIV)
Scott gets discouraged in his pursuit of his NBA dreams many years later, after learning why he’s still in the competition and discouraged by the love of his life yet again slipping through his grasp. He is upset with God that He is allowing these things to happen to him yet again, after facing many hardships in his life up to this point.

For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground. – Job 5:6 (NIV)
This verse from the Book of Job tells us that our struggles don’t just come out of nowhere, but rather they are permitted by God for a purpose. We might not always understand that purpose until much later, even if that means we have to wait until we get to heaven to ask God Himself, but if they are permitted by God, there is a reason. This main message of the Book of Job is a great reminder for Scott Beck and us.
To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his. – Job 12:13 (NIV)
As Scott tries to understand why everything happened to him and why he's still unable to achieve his dreams, he questions God's plan. He doesn't understand why it's not working out in his favor and his doubt grows until he is separated from God. Just like in the Book of Job, Job doubts God. Job doesn't understand why he was stripped of everything he loved and owned. Through the suffering, Job realized it was not his role to understand, but to trust God. This is likely one of the hardest of the main message of the Book of Job because it means we have to rely on God's understanding and not our own.

I am nothing but skin and bones; I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth. – Job 19:20 (NIV)
In the Book of Job, Job realizes his humanity makes him weak and he needs God to be his strength through all his trials and tribulations. It isn’t until Scott realizes the same in “Nothing Is Impossible” that he is able to find the strength and courage to keep going in the pursuit of his dreams.
I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. – Job 19:25 (NIV)
In the Book of Job, Job may doubt God's plan, but he never doubts that God has abandoned him. Even when his friends and family question why Job continues to be faithful, Job stands firmly and fervently in his beliefs. Scott, too, is questioned when he decides to enter open tryouts and pursue his dream of professional basketball. Scott still has the desire for this dream, and knowing that desire came from God, Scott stands firm in his belief that he has to try one more time. Ultimately both Job and Scott know that with God, anything is possible. This is one of the main message from the Book of Job that we can all use when we face obstacles.
I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. – Job 42:2 (NIV)
In the Book of Job, Job recognizes he needs God and realizes that God's plan is greater than ours in every circumstance. God’s will is always better than our own plans for our life. In “Nothing Is Impossible,” Scott struggles to understand what God is doing with his life but he ultimately realizes that God's purpose is greater than what Scott can see.
You may be wondering what happens to Job after all the suffering he's been through. Being a good and faithful servant to the Lord through it all, the Lord blessed him:
After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. And so Job died, an old man and full of years. - Job 42:16-17 (NIV)
In the end, Job is blessed with living a hundred and forty more years and was blessed with another 10 children. What can we learn from this? Being a good and faithful servant, obedient to God's word, will bless us in more ways than if we tried to control our life in our own way. Similarly, Scott learns the same lesson in "Nothing Is Impossible," but you'll just have to watch the movie to find out how!
