1. Beauty in Creation

The Wilsons’ move from the big city to a small town gives them a very wide awakening to what it means to slow down and be present. In the city, the Wilson’s were surrounded by buildings, in what could be described as “a concrete jungle.” The small town of Spring Hill provides a new landscape and much more scenery than they’re used to.

The slower pace of small-town life allows the Wilson’s to take notice of their surroundings more and appreciate this new season of life. They take the time to explore their new home by taking horseback rides, camping, and even searching for rare artifacts. Their new perspective shows us how we can also add appreciation for our surroundings into our own lives.

2. Family Sacrifices

Every member of the Wilson family learns the meaning of sacrifice throughout the series. Anna and Michael sacrifice the familiarity of their friends and school life when they move to Spring Hill. Their grandparents sacrifice the privacy of their home by allowing the Wilson’s to stay there while they finish building their house nearby. Rose and James, the parents, sacrifice their routine and their time to build their new home and make their new life in the country comfortable for all of them.

The Wilson’s sacrifices remind us that we are called to sacrifice for our loved ones just as Jesus did when He died out of love for His people. When we choose to sacrifice for our loved ones, we are living out the way Christ loves in our own lives.

3. New Beginnings

It’s not always easy to navigate starting over in a new place or starting a new chapter in your life. Each member of the Wilson family indeed struggles during the move. Anna doesn’t want to leave her life and her friends in the city. Michael is unsure about starting over in a new school, Rose tries to find new purpose in her life. New beginnings cause us to get out of our comfort zone, which isn’t always ... comfy.

But the way the Wilson’s all come together to support each other through their move shows us how to handle a new beginning with grace and compassion. They lean on each other to support one another during this time. They show love and empathy for one another and encourage each other through this challenging time. You can see their family bond get stronger with each new experience in their new life.
