What Does The Bible Say About Change? Scriptures on Change To Help With Times of Transition

As the old saying goes, change is the only constant in life. From big life changes, like switching careers or becoming a parent, to small adjustments like a new haircut, change can make us afraid and anxious.

We’re often fearful because change can be out of our control, unsure of what’s in store for the future. Luckily, as Christians, we know that one constant source of encouragement is the Bible. We can turn to scripture for Bible verses about change in order to find comfort and peace during times of transition.

What Does the Bible Say About Change?

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

When we’re facing a change in our life, Jeremiah 29:11 is always a comforting Bible verse. In times of change, we usually become fearful or anxious because we’re not sure of what is going to happen or how everything will unfold. But we can rest in the truth knowing that God does have a plan for us and that He will lead us on the right path when we place our trust in Him.

In the Great American Original movie, "The Engagement Plan," financial analyst Wade has his whole life mapped out. He never does anything without a very structured plan. When his plans to propose to his girlfriend, Kayla, start to go awry, he isn't sure how to navigate this unknown situation or handle the changes thrown at him.

Wade learns that God's plans are better than his plans. He learns to lean and trust God in those moments when he doesn't have a plan for the current situation.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV)

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

One thing we can take comfort in is knowing that change is temporary. This scripture on change reminds us that our ultimate goal is eternity and that everything in this life is just preparing us for our eternal life with God.

In "Divine Influencer," social influencer Olivia Golden is very focused on her looks, the clothes in her closet and her image to her followers. When all of that is suddenly stripped from her by her parents in an effort to help her see what's important in life, Olivia no longer can solely focus on what she can "see." With more time on her hands to not worry what is "temporary," she learns to focus more on the "unseen." She renews her spirit in God's grace and learns what true influence looks like: to lead others to Christ.

Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

When we enter into a season of change, our minds can become crowded with questions that weigh us down or a never-ending to-do list that we get bogged down in the tiny details, growing weary and tired. When we clear our minds and keep our eyes focused on God, we can remember where our hope truly lies. This Bible verse about change comforts us in knowing that our strength for the journey is renewed with God by our side.

Victoria in the Great American Original movie, "Finding Faith" is going through a huge time of transition and loss in her life. Though God has always been a close companion of hers, this is the first time in her life she feels like she cannot hear Him. Unsure what to do, she remains loyal and does "not grow weary" in her vigilant search to find God's presence again in her life.

Because she was able to reconnect with God and didn't abandon Him through her time of change, she was able to keep fighting and staying strong.

Ephesians 4:20-24 (NIV)

“That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

Sometimes, change is driven by internal motives rather than external factors. We might evaluate our lifestyle and our choices, and choose to make a change to better our lives, help those around us and ultimately to better serve God. While this still isn’t easy, it’s usually something we feel the Holy Spirit calling us to change in our hearts. He is asking us to have a new mindset, to follow His ways more prudently and to put behind our habits of sin in order to be more fully present to Him.
